A set of energy-momentum constraint-preserving boundary conditions is proposed for the first-order Z4 case. We show the first known example for a pattern $q$ for which $\lim_{n\to \infty} \sqrt[n]{S_n(q)}$ is not an integer. We find the exact value of the limit and show that it is irrational. Then we generalize our results to an infinite sequence of patterns. Finally, we provide further generalizations that start explaining why certain patterns are easier to avoid than others. Finally, we show that if $q$ is a layered pattern of length $k$, then $L(q)\geq (k-1)^2$ holds.

We prove that the total number $S_{n,132}(q)$ of copies of the pattern $q$ in all 132-avoiding permutations of length $n$ is the same for $q=231$, $q=312$, or $q=213$. We provide a combinatorial proof for this unexpected threefold symmetry. We then significantly generalize this result to show an exponential number of different pairs of patterns $q$ and $q'$ of length $k$ for which $S_{n,132}(q)=S_{n,132}(q')$ and the equality is non-trivial.

We study Stirling permutations defined by Gessel and Stanley. We prove that their generating function according to the number of descents has real roots only. We use that fact to prove that the distribution of these descents, and other, equidistributed statistics on these objects converge to a normal distribution.

Using earlier results we prove a formula for the number $W_{(n,k)}$ of 2-stack sortable permutations of length $n$ with $k$ runs, or in other words, $k-1$ descents. This formula will yield the suprising fact that there are as many 2-stack sortable permutations with $k-1$ descents as with $k-1$ ascents. We consider pattern containment and avoidance with a very tight definition that was used first by Riordan more than 60 years ago. Using this definition, we prove the monotone pattern is easier to avoid than almost any other pattern of the same length.
